American Hardwood Pavilion to witness participation from leading U.S. hardwood exporters
The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), the leading international trade association for the American hardwood industry, has announced plans that it will be the main sponsor of the Wood News organized seminars on February 18 within the ‘Delhiwood 2011’ exhibition, which runs from 17 to 20 February at Pragati Maidan, Delhi. AHEC is also hosting an American Hardwood Pavilion at the show, which will involve participation from leading U.S. hardwood exporters, in addition to the Hardwood States Export Group (HSEG) and the Pennsylvania Hardwood Development Council. The conference will provide an opportunity to the participants to gain first hand insights on American hardwoods from industry experts.
Aimed at educating and providing the required information to architects, designers and manufacturers who use hardwoods in the production of furniture, flooring and joinery, the seminars will centre around presentations from industry experts - Michael Snow, AHEC Executive Director, Dr. Scott Bowe, Associate Professor & Wood Products Specialist at the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology, University of Wisconsin and Bob Sabistina, AHEC International Grading Consultant. Michael Snow will talk about the environmental credentials of American hardwoods, while Dr. Bowe will look more closely at the U.S. hardwood forest resource and its potential for end use applications worldwide and in India. Bob Sabistina will provide an introduction to the grading of American hardwood lumber according to the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) rules, which will also include a practical demonstration.
Roderick Wiles, AHEC Director for Africa, Middle East, India and Oceania, said: “Backed by their strong environment credentials and versatility of usage, American hardwoods are generating high interest not only in the businesses involved in wood trade and manufacturing but also from architects and designers. India's rapidly growing economy is an indication of the great potential in this market for American hardwoods, and we are expecting demand for American hardwoods to witness further growth. Through the seminars in New Delhi, we will be able to offer a unique opportunity to provide information to potential and existing users of imported hardwoods to learn about American hardwoods.”
Michael Snow has been the Executive Director of AHEC since 1999. Based in Washington DC, he oversees the Council's promotional programmes around the globe, and manages AHEC's overseas offices in Europe, Mexico, Japan, Hong Kong and China. Dr. Bowe, based in Madison, Wisconsin, is a wood product marketing, manufacturing and management specialist with expertise in wood product demand, utilization and sustainability and the impacts of wood products through product life-cycle assessment. Bob Sabistina, currently based in Shanghai, is an acknowledged expert on grading American hardwood lumber to the NHLA standard and a highly respected teacher, with a long association with both the NHLA and AHEC.
“Hardwoods from America offer more than 20 commercial species which makes them fit for nearly any project. Apart from their environment credentials, they present specifiers and manufacturers around the world with diverse choices unequalled anywhere - from the warm, darker tones of walnut, red alder, cherry and red oak to the lighter hues of white oak, maple and ash, and it is our vision to offer Indian specifiers and manufacturers an alternative to the familiar,” concluded Wiles.
Having successfully participated in the first edition of Delhiwood in 2009 and then in Indiawood 2010, the American Hardwood Pavilion at ‘Delhiwood 2011’ is set to include a generic American hardwood promotion and lumber grading area, in addition to nine individual U.S. hardwood exporting companies, within the stand located in Hall 18 (Upper Level). The participating companies are Bridgewell Resources, Coulee Region Hardwoods, Graf Brothers Lumber, Jim C Hamer Company, Hill Wood Products, Kretz Lumber, Northland Corporation, Northland Forest Products and Turman Wood Group.

FMC CHINA 2011
Furniture Manufacturing & Supply China
Concurrently with FMC Premium, Furniture China,
September 14-17, 2011, the Expo Theme Pavilion, Shanghai
Woodworking Machinery,
Furniture Components & Raw Materials
750 EXHIBITORS, 59,000 SQM, 32,000 TRADE BUYERS
Move to the Expo Theme Pavilion, Reach a New Level
Furniture Manufacturing & Supply China 2011 (FMC China 2011), concurrently with “Furniture China 2011” held in Shanghai New International Expo Center(SNIEC), will be staged alongside FMC Premium at the Expo Theme Pavilion from September 14-17, 2011. FMC PREMIUM is a show especially designed for high-end manufacturers of furniture raw materials & components.
“FMC China 2011” moved to the Expo Theme Pavilion from SNIEC is an inevitable trend of development. In the past years, FMC and Furniture China squeezed each other in SNIEC. SNIEC could not meet the development needs of FMC & Furniture China Exhibition with a short of nearly 150,000 square meters. If it goes, both two exhibitions will lose competitiveness and be vanished in the market.
After moving, FMC will get 79,000 square meters (the exhibition area of FMC China 2010 was 37,000 square meters), meanwhile, the concurrent exhibition, Furniture China will have nearly 80,000 square meters more. The total area of the two shows will be over 350,000 square meters. Since no space limitation existing, both FMC and Furniture China welcome the rapid development, there will be undoubtedly more furniture exhibitors and trade buyers attracted to the Expo Theme Pavilion. (The exhibitors in Furniture China are the targeted visitors of FMC). As for overseas buyers, they, be sure, would prefer an independent, strong, professional FMC show instead of a trade show with no room to develop mixed in a Furniture Fair.
The Expo Theme Pavilion is the Second largest new modern exhibition hall in Shanghai, 200m away from “Chinese Pavilion” of the Shanghai World Expo, which will bring a huge flow to FMC. Moreover, the Metro Line 7 directly connects the two venues (SNIEC and the Expo Theme Pavilion), it is convenient for visitors to go around. Moving to new venue is an important development phase of FMC, the organizer will invest more on FMC China 2011, making sure all the trade buyers have been well organized and FMC upgraded to a new level.
FMC China 2011 consists of three parts:
I. Woodworking Machinery & tools (Hall 1) 25,000 sqm
The Asian largest column-free exhibition hall, which provides two times larger space than before, has enough room for a delegation of European Woodworking Machinery Association, TWMA, and local woodworking associations
II. FMC PREMIUM (Hall 2) 17,000 m2
Targeting on high-end furniture components and raw materials products. The Hall 2 will make sure of HIGH quality and comfort style of FMC PREMIUM.
III. the general Furniture Raw Materials(Hall 3)17,000 m2
In order to help visitors quickly find their interested furniture raw materials products, this hall will be again classified into several thematic area.
- Furniture Hardware & Fittings
- Office Furniture Supplies & Gas Spring
- Furniture Fabric & Leather
- Upholstery Furniture Components & Supplies
- Furniture Coating, Adhesives & Chemicals
- Furniture Panels & Surface Deco
- Furniture Inspection, Design, engineering & Services
In the 2nd half of 2011, FMC is the only woodworking exhibition in China’s market. Industry professionals will not miss such an important event. It can’t be doubt that they will be sure to go visiting FMC in the Expo Theme Pavilion with SUCH short distance of only 7 metro stations’ taking from SNIEC, after their so long journey to Shanghai.
FMC is not a platform built only by organizer, but also exhibitors, trade buyers. FMC organizer takes efforts to make it more powerful, that will benefit to exhibitors, to the industry. For a people who are prepared, change means opportunity. FMC needs your support and foresight. FMC China 2011, an export oriented, will open a new stage in next September.

EUMABOIS SPEAKS FOR SAFETY
|
|
|
|
EUMABOIS PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN “Choose the original – choose success” is the slogan of Eumabois’ campaign to defend “original products” against low-cost imitations. The campaign in 2009-2010 will take the form of seven articles highlighting the seven strengths of the sector’s uniqueness - quality, high technology, know-how, reliability, safety, efficiency and experience.
It’s the second year of the communication campaign promoted by Eumabois – the European federation grouping the leading national Associations representing the manufacturers of machines and accessories for woodworking – to safeguard original products. Now more than ever, it is essential to identify the key elements that clearly separate those who pursue research and innovation, developing solutions that create quality, from those who just “follow” with poor imitations. Eumabois is sending out a strong message to industry operators: before you choose a tool, machine, plant or equipment, make sure that it is the result of an industrial process based on a correct sequence of stages, of constant commitment to consistent improvement and knowledge transfer into final products.
In a very complicated economic scenario, the price factor has a very strong appeal, but when the gap is clearly too wide, it is no longer just a matter of competition: you have to think about “what you don’t see”. The Eumabois campaign is casting a spotlight on those apparently intangible values that are actually the foundations of quality production. Seven concepts, seven plusses that distinguish original European technology, values that often cannot be seen, cannot be easily measured.
Before one chooses a production line or even a single bit, a disk blade or a router, one has to analyze it in relation to concepts like quality, hi-tech, know-how, reliability, safety, efficiency and experience. These are the seven keywords of the Eumabois campaign.
SAFETY
This time the focus is on safety, on the increasing commitment to produce equipment, tools, machines and plants that are safe and take into consideration the health of operators.
Woodworking machinery has always been mostly dangerous, also because the workpieces could be handled manually, allowing hazardous proximity between the operator and the moving tool, i.e. the hazardous area. This situation dates far back in time and, to be honest, applies to most production equipment, although accidents have been particularly frequent in the woodworking industry, as shown in the European statistics on industrial accidents.
Safety is one of the most critical factors that must be taken into account when designing any woodworking equipment. For many years now, the laws of all European countries have introduced strict and specific obligations and/or have fixed the essential features and specifications to obtain safety certifications and markings. This action has certainly contributed to a massive and consistent reduction of accidents in furniture factories and joiner workshops.
Another step forward was made in 1995, when all these rules and regulations were combined in a European directive, the Machinery Directive, which was then updated and upgraded in 2009 with the introduction of the 2006/42/EC regulation, coupled with a specific set of standards that provide for clear interpretation and indicate applicable technical solutions to increase the “safety degree” of machinery.
It is worth noticing that this huge “corpus” was created with a significant contribution by European manufacturers, who were involved in the final draft with their tangible experience based on daily work, their skills and the results of research carried out by companies for many years: now, 35 European standards regulate the universe of woodworking machinery, defining and ensuring their compliance with the highest safety levels. Today, safety is no longer a matter of sensitivity of individual entrepreneurs or companies, but rather a set of actions, rules and procedures to be complied with.
The safety culture has taken giant steps and new laws have played an important role, not only because they define clear and precise rules, but because they promote a culture that puts operators, their health and their working conditions in the forefront. Responsible entrepreneurs now have a set of rules that give full dignity to the behavior they have always adopted for the sake of workers and their health. And, at the same time, they can count on tools that prevent those who cannot or will not abide by the law from spoiling the market.
And figures prove it: woodworking technology has been recording a strong reduction of accidents. A new, long-awaited age, for which European manufacturers have worked enthusiastically. A success confirmed by the gradual conversion of European standards into ISO standards, through closer and closer collaboration between the standardization institutes of Europe and the United States, China, Japan and many more non-European countries.
There is still one issue to solve, for which a lot has already been done: all manufacturers now offer training courses for the correct operation of complex machines and plants, and in these courses, safety is always a key topic. It’s been a long and tiring way, requiring constant and significant investments, to increase the safety of technology exponentially without compromising on its potential or productivity. As mentioned, this is the result of design, experimentation and research that are carried on only by those who create technology, not those who copy.

DIFFENBACHER ON COURSE FOR SUCCESS WITH NEW PRODUCTS
|
|
|
|
Dieffenbacher reported a brilliant 2009 business. Group sales increased by about 10% to €330m. Shareholders' equity grew by €5m with a significant balance sheet profit. "Over the next two fiscal years, we are expecting to achieve similar levels of sales and profits as in 2009," reports the CEO, Wolf-Gerd Dieffenbacher.
The Wood-based panel division has already signed firm contracts for 2010 amounting to more than 100% of its sales goals, and almost 95% of its goal for 2011. €100m worth of orders have already been placed in the first 3 months, resulting in sales that are running well above expectations for this period. As a result, the Group's order book is currently bulging to the tune of €650m, thus guaranteeing full production capacity has been achieved until well into 2011. Among the orders, several MDF lines have been sold to China, while other orders have come from France and Columbia. The highlight is a complete plant to be supplied to IKEA which will be used for producing extremely thin fiberboards for use in lightweight furniture.
Intensive development work continued during the previous financial year, with successes being achieved in many areas especially those having a significant positive ecological impact. These include energy plants in which wood waste is burned, with the resulting heat energy being used to supply the factory.
Lines for manufacturing wood pellets as well as machines for producing wood fiber insulating panels also form part of the future production range. A step in this direction has already been taken resulting in firm orders for these products.
By acquiring the majority holdings in Shanghai Wood Based Panel Machinery Co., Ltd. (SWPM) during the first half of 2009, Dieffenbacher reinforced its leading position in the Chinese market. This measure also underlines the company's strategy of being present with close proximity to customers in the most important markets in the world, not only with sales, production and engineering capacity, but also with service and local spare parts assistance.
SWPM is the best known domestic supplier of machines for the wood panel industry in China, and has been a consistent driver for international expansion during recent years. SWPM commands significant market shares in the area of multi-daylight machines in China. As a result of the acquisition and a recent development of a four-foot wide continuous press Dieffenbacher is now able to offer a competitive solution in this market segment also.
During the 2009 financial year, Dieffenbacher invested additional sums in the training and education of its employees and apprentices. As a result, the company is taking active steps to counteract the forecast skills shortage resulting from demographic change.
Dieffenbacher sees itself as exceptionally positioned for the coming years. "We have outstanding products, and excellent and highly motivated employees. We find ourselves on a firm financial footing, and thus we can look forward to the next few years with great optimism," comments Wolf-Gerd Dieffenbacher, CEO of the group of companies.

SCHNEIDER INVESTS €30 M IN A WOOD FIBER INSULATION BOARD PLANT |
|
|
|
The wood processing plant of Holzwerk Gebr Schneider GmbH based in Eberhardzell, Germany, will be starting construction of a new plant at the company's headquarters in mid-February 2010. The system has been designed to allow both flexible and pressure-resistant wood fiber panels to be produced without any modification or conversion work. The plant is configured to operate with a total annual output of both products of about 250,000 m³. According to the company, the investment will amount to about €30 m, from which approximately €5 m will be spend for the building and other civil cost. Installation of the systems is due to start in May, and the plant is expected to start production in December 2010. Production is to be ramped up in line with demand, with 3-shift working being used. Back in December 2009, Schneider and Dieffenbacher GmbH &CO KG signed a supply contract for the main plant components.
The system will be capable of producing single-layer panels with a thickness range of 20 – 240 mm and densities between 35 and 200 kg/m³. This will be Dieffenbacher’s second insulation board plant following the commissioning of Homatherm GmbH in Berga at the start of April 2009. Given an optimum production sequence, the fiber throughput will be about 7000 kg/h (od). A large amount of the raw material is going to be provided by the wood chips from the company's own saw mill and finishing plant. Furthermore, some roundwood will be used. Heat and energy for the insulation board plant amounting to about 12.5 MW thermal capacity will come from the nearby Bio-Power SKW GmbH, operating on its own premises since 2004.
Schneider is initially intending to market a large proportion of the insulation board production directly through its existing sales network. However, the company is also planning to expand its sales activities. A small share of the production will be value added inhouse on a production line for sandwich elements being installed in parallel to the insulation board plant. This line will glue the wood fiber insulation boards to panel elements at the factory, and these will then be marketed as semifinished products.
Until now, Schneider has predominantly produced structural wood members for modern house building. Its product range includes not only classic structural wood but also KVH (construction solid wood), laminated beams and wooden planking, and even glued ceiling elements. In spite of difficult economic conditions, it was possible to increase sales in 2009 to about €50 m. A total of 160,000 m³ of wood products were produced and sold. The addition of the insulation board production is expected to boost the annual turnover by about €30 m to about €85 m by 2012. The workforce is set to increase from the current 200 to about 250. Schneider is also investing in expanding its solid wood activities. Additional continuous dryers are being installed and the KVH production is currently being expanded with a second production line as well as another sorting line. The investment volume for this is about €3 m.

INDIA WOOD 2010 TO DRAW AUDIENCE FROM SOUTH ASIA,
SOUTH EAST ASIA & THE GULF |
|
|
|
The 6th edition of
India Wood
is being organized from the 4-8th Of
March 2010 at the Bangalore International
Exhibition Centre, Bangalore.
In a press release, Co-organizers of India wood,
PDA TRADE FAIRS, have indicated Indiawood-2010
the sixth edition of Asia’s most definitive
international exhibition on woodworking,
machinery, tools, fittings, accessories, raw
materials & products will pay special attention
to providing the exhibitors an opportunity to
address buyers from the entire South Asian,
South East Asian & the gulf region.
Mr. Pradeep Devaiah, Chairman &
CEO, PDA TRADE FAIRS is confident, INDIAWOOD is
now more than ever in a unique position to cater
to the requirement of the above markets in
addition to India.
INDIAWOOD had a modest beginning in 1999 as an
educative platform for the INDIAN WOODWORKING
INDUSTRY. Ever since then, it’s broken new
ground edition after edition. INDIAWOOD 1999 had
103 exhibitors from India and overseas. By 2002
with 147 exhibitors from 15 countries & country
pavilions from Germany and Italy, INDIAWOOD had
started catalyzing the Indian
Woodworking
Industries growth by providing a platform that
show cased modern technologies.
By 2004, the event had 223 exhibitors from 22
countries with country pavilions from Germany,
Italy, Spain & Taiwan & INDIAWOOD had arrived to
stay.

By 2006, INDIAWOOD, started attracting audience
from the neighboring countries as well, Srilanka,
Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan started looking to
Indiawood for sourcing their woodworking
technology. INDIAWOOD 2006 was over 18000 sq.
mtrs. of exhibition space to become the new
single largest sourcing ground for woodworking
technologies for the entire South ASIAN region.
The event had 343 participants from 26 countries
and country pavilions from Brazil, China,
Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Spain, Taiwan & USA.

Indiawood 2008 was a resounding success, setting
a new benchmark amongst the woodworking industry
events in the whole of Asia. The exhibition was
27000 sqm with over 400 exhibitors and country
pavilions from Brazil, China, Germany, Italy,
Taiwan, Turkey and the USA. The edition
attracted audiences beyond South Asia & drew
visitors from Singapore, Malaysia & Thailand
too.

PDA Trade Fairs, in the press
note reiterate - As the world is going through a
financial crisis, many smaller regional trade
fairs could become untenable due to minimal
internal demand. The automatic choice therefore
for exhibitors would be to look at a successful
trade show that would cater to many regions.
India alone after seeing a growth
rate in excess of 9 per cent for the last 3
years, has held its ground, industry experts
estimate India’s growth rate in the current year
at between 7 and 8 per cent Per Annum. There are
over 40 million households in the mid to upper
affluence level. About 1.6 million households
earn over USD 100,000 and spend USD 9,000 of
this on luxury goods, each year. In light of
these statistics, most International companies
from various sectors and from the wood working
sector would be looking at a strong potential
market such as India to revive their sales and
revenues.
The woodworking industry in India is considered
a sunrise sector and Indiawood has fuelled the
growth of this Industry. Indiawood 2010 will
showcase everything from simple hand saws to the
latest CNC machines. Indiawood will also
showcase the full range of wood processing
technologies, fittings, Raw materials,
accessories & tools from around the world.
Helping to meet the demands of the booming local
furniture manufacturing industries, Indiawood
2010 will, once again, continue to catalyze the
growth of this sector also spawn the growth of
new Industries, thereby creating immense
employment opportunities for skilled wood
workers.
Indiawood, as the most definitive
wood working industry show outside USA and
Europe, now more than ever is in a position to
deliver potential business not only through the
Indian market’s internal requirements but also
from buyers from the rest of the Asian and the
Gulf region.
To be a part of the estimated US$4.4 billion
Indian furniture manufacturing sector and make
new contacts for your business from the rest of
the Asian and Gulf region - Indiawood 2010
promises to be the most definitive platform.
INDIAWOOD 2010 has already sold out over 65% of
the 30,000 Sq Mtrs space, with country pavilions
from Germany, Italy, Taiwan and USA having
already confirmed large spaces for their
respective country pavilions. INDIAWOOD 2010 is
expecting a phenomenal participation from China
too. |

the large potential ahead in the Indian market
for engineered panel products like Medium
Density Fibre (MDF) boards and particle boards,
Greenply plans to set up India’s largest MDF

refiner, a latest Steinemann Satos 8 head
sanding line (the first in India), and the

The Government’s
restrictions on plywood have also resulted in
the additional growing demand of the panels to
be met by engineered panel products like MDF and
particle boards.
The fact that these
engineered panels have very high utilization of
raw material resources as opposed to plywood,
and considering India’s scarce supply of raw
material, has resulted in the government
strongly promoting the manufacturing of these
products.

scheduled to commence trial production by end of
Dec’09. Greenply plans to manufacture MDF in the
following range:

TULIPWOOD IS THE THEME FOR THIS YEAR'S AHEC
PAVILION AT INTERZUM |
|
|
|
Two years ago, the American Hardwood
Export Council (AHEC), had a big impact at
Interzum with its red oak pavilion raising
awareness for the species and creating a focal
point for the US hardwood industry to network
with hardwood buyers from around the world.
This year it is American tulipwood
that will feature strongly in both, the display
and information graphics, as well as the
structure itself. “Over the past year, AHEC have
been raising the profile for this very
sustainable and versatile species and
challenging the market to look at it
differently. I mean this literally as one of our
aims has been to show everyone how exciting it
looks and that it doesn’t always have to painted
and stained”, says David Venables, AHEC’s
European Director.
The “tulipwood challenge” as AHEC
calls it, gained extra momentum last autumn when
top architect David Adjaye used it for his
“Sclera” pavilion for the London Design
Festival. The challenge of treating the
tulipwood for external use has led to an ongoing
cooperation between AHEC and wood treatment
specialists Osmose. The latest research results
and samples of treated and exposed tulipwood
will be displayed on stand.
The AHEC stand will again feature
interactive grading areas with industry experts
on hand to carryout demonstrations and answer
questions on how American hardwood lumber and
veneer are graded for export.
The final element will be an internet
café area where visitors can come and try the
new user friendly AHEC website to learn more
about the potential of US hardwoods, order free
publications, enjoy a cup of coffee and talk to
the experts. If you trade in US hardwoods or
want to know how to develop these species as
part of your business make sure to visit the
AHEC pavilion,
Hall 5.1, C-010, D-011. |

HOLZ-HER REICH Spezialmaschinen GmbH, one of the
leading manufacturers of woodworking machines
will present an abundance of new items in the
area of high quality machine technology at the
LIGNA 2009.
The newest model of horizontal
pressure beam saws, the CUT 6120, guarantees
absolute cutting precision, comprehensive basic
equipment and a variety of options as well as
the possibility of simple linkage to an
automatic panel storage system, even in craft
shops.
The enormous cutting potential of the saw motor
with 11 kW of sawing power, and the 2.2 kW
pre-scoring unit cut stacks of panels with a
thickness of up to 70 mm without problems. The
height and width of the pre-scoring saw is
adjusted by a motor over the control. The
bi-directional groover has a motor for
adjustment of the groove depth up to 34 mm and
offers extremely fast machining of grooves in
all panel materials. The pressure of the
pressure beam is adjustable and the control
ensures that sensitive panel material is not
damaged. The work is also handled carefully by
the air cushion tables, preventing any scratches
when moving the panel material.
Another new feather is the integrated
postforming unit which allows postforming panels
with thickness up to 50 mm at the edges to be
cut without tearing. The machine is controlled
by a PC with Windows OS and is simple to
operate.
The horizontal pressure beam saws are fed by a
connected horizontal panel storage system, which
automatically and dynamically charges the
machine with panels from storage. Charging and
processing of the sawing cycles can be
accomplished in parallel, saving a great deal of
time in comparison to previous charging of the
sawing jobs.
With a total of six top models HOLZ-HER presents
the entire width of the Edgebander product line
from entry-level model to industrial machine.
The basic
UNO series includes the UNO 1303 and UNO 1307
models equipped with a jointing cutter, glue
application system nozzle, end trimming unit,
flush, radius or chamfer cutting unit, shaping
cutter for postforming panels and flat or radius
scrapers. The UNO series machines panels with

can process edge thicknesses up to 30 mm and
panel thicknesses up to 60 mm (new optional
feature up to 80 mm).
Feed rates up to 30 m/min. guarantee high
productivity and rapid processing of all
required edging work.
Guided by a high strength industrial chain and
belt bridge the work is transported through the
machine uniformly and calmly.
The
machine concept of the CONTRIGA is laid out
individually, whereby high performance equipment
to match the requirements of individual shops,
from multifunction glue application systems
to
end trimming units, cutters, shaping cutters,
grooving and profiling units, sanders and even
finishing equipment such as radius and flat
scrapers, buffers or, alternatively polishers
can be attached.
All
types of panel materials and edging materials
can be processed without problems. The
attachments also have nesting capabilities,
meaning that they can be equipped with floating
heads for processing. Machining of high-gloss
panels and high gloss edging is also easily
possible, whereby the high gloss edges can be
polished to any desired degree of gloss.
The machine is controlled on a Touchscreen
allowing simple graphic operation using the
windows-like user surface. All information is
displayed in clear text and in millimetres, so
that the user can easily program the machine.
In the area of panel handling the Nürtingen
manufacturer HOLZ-HER will also exhibit
edgebanders with RETURN, which provides for
automatic lateral transport at the end of the
edgebander, and then returns the panel to the
user over a conveyer belt. This eliminates the
costs for a second man on the edgebander.
PK

pneumatically on a linear guide.
The
unit can easily be swivelled from the vertical
to the horizontal sawing position with a
handwheel.
The Dust Flow System (DFC System) from the Leitz
Company, which provides for particularly
effective evacuation of the sawdust in the
sawing unit, is integrated into the sawing unit.
The generously dimensioned exhaust connection
with diameter of 120 mm is attached directly to
the saw housing and integrated into the Dust
Flow System.
When cutting plastic coated panels or veneered
materials, the motor driven pre-scoring unit can
also be connected to the control. With its 0.55
kW at 12.000 rpm it prevents tears in the
surface during further processing.
Clearly Structured – the Control
The control panel is located clearly and
ergonomically within reach on the moving sawing
beam. The control can be operated at eye height.
The technically well designed control panel
contains the function switches for
starting/stopping the sawing unit, the pneumatic
arrest for the sawing beam, function switches
for scoring start/stop as well as error
identification. The error identification is
indicated by the button flashing. The digital

NEW STYLE BUNDLE TURNER BY SWEED |
|
New design brings better
efficiency and cost savings!
Sweed Machinery, Inc. has three reasons to
celebrate the release of their new style Load
Turner: compaction, open design, and cost. Sweed
engineers developed an improved, cost-effective
option for customers in need of C-Turners. C-Turners
are essential machines for plants that process
flat
material such as panel, plates, or any
large wood, metal or composites; C-Turners make
it practical to inspect and process two-sided
material of virtually any size. If space is at a
premium, a rotating base allows lift operators
to load, turn, and retrieve material from the
same side. Loads may be completely turned in as
little as fifteen seconds, or paused in the
upright position for inspection or individual
piece removal. Sweed’s new style Load Turner is
very compact, taking up less floor space than
the standard Sweed C-Turner yet performing the
same function as the much larger Sweed Rotating
C-Turner. This exciting new Load Turner has an
open design; all of the operating components are
within easy reach for inspection, maintenance
and repair. Furthermore, with the new Load
Turner, you get increased performance at a
fraction of the cost of the comparable Roating
C-Turner – only $27,000.00 versus $52,000.00.
Sweed’s new Load Turner is a great performing
unit at a huge cost savings. |

SCHENKMANN-PIEL--ENGINEERING
SUPPLIES A NEW HOT GAS ENERGY SYSTEM FOR RAUCH SPANPLATTEN GmbH
SPAIN |
|
|
|
The Rauch Company has ordered for the existing plant, Rauch Spanplatten GmbH
in Markt Bibart,
a new drum dryer with a 25 MW hot gas generator with fuel supply from
SCHENKMANN-PIEL-Engineering-GmbH.
The required process heat will be produced on a 35m² grates as
is the case with two granulates injection firing systems. The design
of the hot gas generator particularly achieves an optimized energy concept
and an excellent ash separation. A comprehensive control system facilitates
consistent final moistures, and concurrently, a user friendly and optimised
operation of the installation.
The drum drying is achieved with a pre-dryer (Ω-curves).
Next to the common material input position for very wet material
in the ascending duct, this also comprises a second inlet position for
material with less moisture in the falling section.
The drum is manufactured with the well known high capacity
internals. These internals guarantee a gentle drying of the material
at lower outlet temperatures. This ensures the realisation of equal
final moisture of the particles under the best possible utilisation
of the used heat. At the end of the drum-cycle, most of the material
is separated from the airflow in the discharge box.
The exhaust gases from the discharge box are pre-cleaned in
the cyclone battery. For optimal energy utilisation they are then
partly redirected to the mixing chamber. The excess gases are cleaned
in a wet electro filter.
Schenkmann-Piel-Engineering GmbH will begin supply in
February 2009. The completion of the assembly (also under the
responsibility of SPE) and the production of the first dried
particles will take place in august 2009.
SCHENKMANN-PIEL-Engineering GmbH is a 100% subsidiary
of the Dieffenbacher-Group in Eppingen, Germany.
The Dieffenbacher-Group is a global leader in manufacturing
complete production lines for the wood-based panel industry, and
Forming and Automation Systems for processing metal, plastics and isostatic products.

AMERICAN ASH: THE
PERFECT CHOICE FOR THE VISITORS CENTRE AT THE
AÑANA SALT VALLEY IN
SPAIN |
|
|
|
For
the team at the Landa-Ochandiano workshop in
Spain, American ash was the natural choice for a
building which stands as a testament to one of
Spain’s oldest industries – salt production.
Opened in October 2008, the simple design of the
Visitors’ Centre at the Añana Salt Valley, in
the province of Álava, combines old and new
elements and the aesthetical appeal and
flexibility of American ash made this species
the perfect choice.
Mikel Landa, one of the architects responsible
for the project, says: “The light tone and
marked grain of American ash provides a great
visual effect and the wood is easy to cut into
small strips which allow for the bending we
needed to take on the shape of the building’s
skin. In some ways the building resembles an
upside down ship’s hull so wood is the natural
choice.”
History and restoration of the Añana Salt Valley
Añana Saltworks are inland saltworks that exist
because of a geological phenomenon called a
diapir which creates hyper-saline springs.
Saltmaking activity has been continuous from
822 until the end of the twentieth century,
although it is thought to have started even
earlier than the ninth century. In the Middle
Ages its
salt was sold throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
A series of circumstances during the last years
of the 20th century drove the
saltmakers to other industries and with no
maintenance, the buildings fell into disrepair.
A Master Plan restoration plan began in 2003,
including the refurbishment of some buildings
between the town and the saltworks. Work began
in 2004 to restore the old salt store which was
to become a visitor’s centre.
Project
Only the perimeter walls of the salt store
remained and the idea was initially to turn it
into a visitors’ centre with exhibitions,
displays and guided tours on what had been an
important industry for the area for hundreds of
years. Later on, the idea is that this building
could be used as a sales centre where visitors
could buy salt made by the traditional method.
The base still existed on which to develop the
new elements which would create a mix of old and
new.
Genesis
The project was based around a simple design for
the visitors’ centre. The exterior shape is
elliptical, fulfilling all the requirements for
a practical display and meeting area and
creating an interesting interior space with
subdued lighting to create atmosphere. This
geometric shape is formed by the roof of the
building, linked to the masonry walls on both
sides and the floor. It has an oblique cut on
the east side that creates access to the
building, with two other side openings.
The inspiration for the design, material and
structure came from the architect’s experience
of building his own kayak, using wood to create
its unique curved shape. So the design
resembles an upside down boat’s hull.
Frame
There
are seventeen vertical arches made of 12mm thick
layers
of laminated larch wood. The straight and curved
elements were glued at the factory, so the
frames were built into halves and assembled at
the construction site. Joints were made using
epoxy resins and stainless steel threaded bolts.
Support steel shoes were made of stainless steel
because the building is situated in a
hyper-saline environment which causes corrosion.
Planking
The frames are connected to each other by
American ash strips placed in two layers, one of
them directly fixed to the upper face of the
arch members and the other one fixed to the
lower face. Waterproof sealant has been applied
to the external face of the upper layer. The
lower side of American ash wood is visible from
the interior.
American ash was selected for aesthetical and
mechanical reasons. On one hand, this wood has a
great visual quality with a marked grain that
makes you feel as if you are inside a ship’s
hull. Also this species is easy to machine into
small strips, allowing the bending needed to
take on the shape of the building’s skin.
To obtain the two layers of American ash, boards
8mm thick and 25mm wide were used, with a curved
dovetail so that the fit of one board with the
next allows a turning between boards. The
surface is sanded, to give its final appearance,
and to be fitted in place, the strips of
American ash are glued on the edge of the
dovetails.
Exterior
The
exterior is completed with a third layer of wood
placed on the outside to create the external
visible surface. Ipe wood was chosen for this
function for its natural weathering properties
and good durability.
This Ipe wood layer is fixed in rectangular
strips 8mm thick and 25mm wide, placed with an
8mm space between them. The arrangement allows
water to flow through onto the waterproof sealed
layer below, above the outer layer of ash. An
elastic one-component waterproof sealing has
been used for this. To allow the boards to take
the shape of the ellipsoid, the space between
the boards varies from 8mm to 12mm depending on
the radius from the transverse curvature which
differs along the shape.
Roof
The
building’s roof has a horizontal section built
with a glulam wooden framework of Larch wood and
a board of phenolic-plywood. On the exterior,
the waterproof seal is visible, placed right on
top of the plywood board.
The rain water from the flat roof and from the
ellipsis runs through two stainless steel
gutters that take the shape of the wall and of
the ellipsoid. The gutter section has three
sheets, the first one is flat, the second sheet
is cylindrical and the third one has an
ellipsoidal shape. All three are welded
together.
Installations
Between the two layers of American ash there is
a thick layer of insulation of rockwool. The
masonry perimeter walls are visible from the
interior in the intersections in the ellipsoidal
skin. The heating system for the building is an
electric radiant floor
Architect Mikel Landa says: “The environmental
conditions of high salinity, the requirements
for the structure and the ellipsoid idea led us
to select wood as the main material. Wood has
been used for the structure, interior and
exterior sheathing, joinery and some flooring.
The use of different species, in line with their
individual mechanical, technological and
aesthetic characteristics, has produced a unique
building which testifies to the adaptability of
this naturally sustainable material. |

Banerjee mentioned that the exhibition has
provided an opportunity for the technological
upgradation of the woodworking machinery and
many international players have either set up
new establishments or entered into tie up with
the Indian entrepreneurs for marketing and
manufacturing state of the art technology,
woodworking machinery in the country. The
industry, despite the constraint of raw
material, is on expansion mode and a number of
units have gone for either captive plantation or
sourcing it from social forestry besides using
agricultural residues from manufacturing quality
panels and boards.
A number of
delegations, at least from 20 countries, are
expected to visit the Panelexpo 2009 with a view
to sourcing the requirements of Panel and
boards, Mr. B.K. Banerjee added. Panelexpo 2009
would thus be organized with a much fanfare this
time. Mr. B.K. Banerjee urged the industry to
take advantage of the opportunity provided by
the Federation to upgrade the technology and
product quality and ensure increased exports as
well as domestic sales.
The focus this year
will be greater use of bamboo in the manufacture
of Panel and boards besides a number of
handicraft items manufactured out of bamboo.
Lack of raw material availability has pushed the
industry to look for alternative raw-materials
and bamboo, which is available abundantly in the
North-Eastern areas and has come to occupy a
place of pride as a raw material for manufacture
of Panel products. The technology which is
developed indigenously will be showcased in the
Panelexpo 2009 Exhibition, Mr.B.K. Banerjee
added. |

VERTICAL PANEL SAWS PRECISION SAWING WITH THE NEW V-CUT 1275 |
|
|
|
As
one of the leading manufacturers of vertical
panel saws HOLZ-HER Reich Spezialmaschinen GmbH
presented the newest model in its range of high
quality vertical panel saws at the International
HOLZ-HER Days in September 2008.
The name V-CUT 1275 stands for maximum cutting
precision and ergonomic handling for cutting
panel type wood materials. Cutting lengths up to
5.30 m and cutting heights up to 2.20 m can be
sawed
easily
up to a cutting depth of 75 mm. The completely
welded, self-supporting base frame guarantees
maximum rigidity for superior accuracy and
angularity when cutting. This result is achieved
by the extremely high quality design and
equipment in all areas. Complete use of hardened
linear guides for the sawing beam, the sawing
unit and the sawing carriage is your guarantee
for the accuracy of the V-CUT 1275 vertical
panel saws from HOLZ-HER. The panels are placed
on the bottom, stainless steel workpiece support
in contact with the anodised support matrix,
extending over the entire support surface.
Pneumatic deflection of the support matrix
during horizontal cutting ensures that it is
cannot be cut
while sawing the panel. The bottom stainless
steel workpiece support is designed for minimum
wear and long service life. Heavy panels with
large formats can be transported easily on the
supports. This is possible thanks to an
elevating roller transport system with manually
controlled elevating rollers, which lift the
panel allowing it to be moved easily. A middle
workpiece support is installed at an ergonomic
height for small workpieces. This consists of
thee (optionally five) hinged workpiece
supports, which have a safety device to prevent
them from being moved back unintentionally.
These middle workpiece supports also have end
stops to prevent small workpieces from being
pushed by the saw blade during horizontal
cutting, thus ensuring that they remain securely
in place.
Heavy Duty and High Performance – The Sawing
Unit
With power of 5.5 kW the sawing unit easily
masters all jobs. It moves on two
surface-hardened linear guides and can be moved
in and out with a horizontal motion also on
linear guides. The unit can be pivoted easily
from the vertical to the horizontal sawing
position with a hand wheel.
The saw blade has a diameter of 303 mm and can
be changed very easily using the ProLock quick
clamping system. The splitting wedge can also be
retracted for light cut-outs. When the saw moves
out of the cut, it moves back to its original
position ready for the next cut.
A Dust Flow System (DFC System) from the Leitz
Company is integrated into the sawing carriage
for particularly effective removal of the dust
and chips in the sawing unit. The generously
dimensioned dust extraction connection with
diameter of 120 mm is located directly on the
saw housing and the Dust Flow System.
The
motor-driven scoring saw can also be switched on
on the control when sawing plastic coated panels
or veneered materials. With an output of 0.55 kW
at 12,000 rpm, it ensures tear-free surfaces for
further processing. The scorer and pressure shoe
guide are also equipped with hardened linear
guides and guide carriage to ensure high
accuracy here as well.
The V-CUT 1275 sawing unit can be closed with a
door, whose acoustic insulation significantly
reduces noise emissions. Standard use of a low
noise saw blade also provides for noise
reduction. The sawing unit on the new vertical
panel saw from HOLZ-HER is control with two
levers. The top and bottom plunge levers control
when the saw moves into the cutting position.
The bottom plunge lever can be moved out of the
way, allowing control in the uppermost sawing
position. The interval between the floor and
plunge lever is 1,820 mm. This ensures that the
blade can be moved in easily in the uppermost
position.
The bottom plunge lever has an integrated
contact roller to automatically move it out of
the way when cutting through the vertical
cutting position. As an optional feature the saw
is also equipped with a pneumatic plunge in/out
function for even easier control.
The high performance sawing unit runs on two
surface-hardened linear guides on the aluminium
sawing beam, which itself runs on hardened
half-round guides on the base frame. Three
manual dimension indicators are attached for
simple adjustment of the cutting dimensions. It
is possible to select between an absolute
dimensions from the bottom workpiece support to
the middle workpiece support or a relative
dimensions from the upper cutting line in
consideration of the saw blade thickness. The
beam is arrested pneumatically in the top and
bottom area from the control panel ensuring
maximum angularity at the cutting line.
Clearly Structured – The Control
The control panel is clearly arranged and
ergonomically located in easy reach on the
moving sawing beam. Control is accomplished at
eye height. The well designed control panel
contains the control switches for
starting/stopping the sawing unit, pneumatically
arresting the sawing beam, and starting and
stopping the scorer as well as an error
indication feature. Errors are indicated by the
buttons flashing. Optional features such as a
digital dimension display for the horizontal cut
and motor-driven precision adjustment of the
sawing unit are also located here. A handle on
the control panel for moving the sawing beam
facilitates handling of the machine. |

TULIPWOOD CREATES
A STUNNING SHOWCASE FOR WOOD AT DUBLIN’S PLAN
EXPO |
|
|
|
With a brief to
create a flexible stand design for the Irish
Wood Marketing Federation at this year’s Plan
Expo, architect Ciaran O’Connor set about
creating a design which would make a strong
visual statement about wood, allowing visitors
to experience all its special qualities. And he
chose American tulipwood to do it.
ringing together a
group of companies from the wood industry to
present the diversity and adaptability of this
uniquely sustainable material, the structure of
the 110m2 stand is made up of 1.2m wide
tulipwood slatted panels which form three
individual spaces of varying sizes, each using
space and light in a different way. The smallest
of these (2.4m2) at the front of the stand is an
enclosed space where a simple wood sculpture by
Michael Warren is enhanced by the shafts of
light
coming through discreet openings in the panel
roof. The architect intends this space to
provide visitors with some relief from the
exhibition hubbub – providing the calm and
contemplative atmosphere that wood is uniquely
capable of creating. The second space (3.6m x
2.4m) has two entrances with five structural
fins spanning the open top for maximum light.
This space features product displays and samples
from the participating companies in a light open
area. The third and largest space (3.6m x 3.6m)
provides more exhibition area. Its roof,
accessed by stairs – all in American red oak -
provides a ‘viewing platform’ – an area where
visitors can indulge in a spot of ‘people
watching’ or get together for an informal
meeting. Another American hardwood – maple, is
used throughout for the floor.
Ciaran
O’Connor is, of course, passionate about wood.
Past projects, such as the Marine Institute in
Galway, are testaments to his commitment to a
material which he believes, above all others,
reacts with the human psyche to create an
atmosphere of warmth and calm. When it came to
specifying the wood for this exhibition stand he
chose a species that is beginning to make its
mark with architects and specifiers as both
versatile and attractive, reversing the trend
for what might be seen as more glamorous
species. “American tulipwood is strong and
flexible and it’s readily available because it
grows so abundantly. And I immediately saw its
potential for a structure like this, with its
crisp look, attractive grain and varying colour
hues, to create something which would make a
strong statement. There is huge diversity in
timber and inevitably fashion and trends will
influence our choices. Here was an opportunity
to show how a species which has been
traditionally regarded as rather utilitarian can
really come into its own in creating space and
sensory experiences in the context of a busy
exhibition where visitors are bombarded with
information. My love of wood is very much based
on its ability to connect with us in a way that
many other materials simply cannot. I also
wanted this wood to speak for itself, outside of
any cultural or fashion influences, to provide a
strong but simple effect.”
Simplicity is certainly the
keynote of the stand design. An important
element of the brief was that the stand could be
built and broken down quickly and easily. The
uniform and interchangeable panels of 100mm wide
tulipwood slats are simply bolted to the
uprights top and bottom and easy break-down and
storage will give the stand a long and useful
life. The wood has been treated to maintain its
appearance and withstand the inevitable wear and
tear caused by stand visitors.
The idea behind the coming
together of organisations on the Irish Wood
Marketing Federation Stand is to tell the whole
wood story – the qualities and versatility of
timber, how to specify on the basis of ‘fit for
purpose’, timber supply; the technology and
treatments available and innovations in
engineered timber – all demonstrated with
examples of outstanding projects. The idea is
that the stand will provide a real
centre of excellence for
information and advice for architects,
specifiers and builders about specifying wood as
the exhibitors come together in one place.
Says Donal Magner of the Wood
Marketing Federation: “We want to get our
audience thinking about timber in ways that they
have not before. New joinery techniques and
innovative treatment technology are advancing
the uses and applications for timber very
quickly and in a world where sustainability is
the watchword, timber is more relevant for a
wide range of applications than ever before. We
want to tell the timber story.”
This is the second major
showcase project for American tulipwood this
year. Architect David Adjaye chose the species
for this year’s Size + Matter Project for the
London Design Festival, using new treatment
technology for this large exterior project – the
‘Sclera’ pavilion which was situated on London’s
South Bank in September.
As visitors wander through the
different spaces of Ciaran O’Connor’s stand at
Plan Expo he wants their senses to be calmed by
the atmosphere and spatial experience of the
stand as they absorb information and view
projects. And its simple tulipwood that sets the
tone for what should be an uplifting experience. |
